Wayfarer leads Achmed away from Artemis and the two ships pound each other into wrecks. Achmed is abandoned by her survivors who become POWs when Artemis returns with Wayfarer’s LACs. [HAE]

Act of Annexation. Law under which the Trevor’s Star System is admitted to the Star Kingdom of Manticore. It specifies that the House of Lords cannot be increased by more than ten percent by San Martino peers between any two general elections and none can be seated before the next general election. The High Ridge government refuses to call a new general election, fearing that a change in the House of Lords will result in their loss of control of the government. [WOH]

Act of Toleration. Law that legalized other faiths on Grayson, passed only a century earlier. [FOD]

Acuminata. PRH ambassador to Masada. [SOTSp]

Adam. Prisoner held on Hades, brother of a woman named Amy. He attempted to prevent her being taken as a slave and hit the SS man who tried. The pilot of the shuttle then killed him with a pulse rifle. [EOH]

Adamon. Female ACS commander assigned to Basilisk Station. [EOH]

Adams. Grayson councilman, the Minister of Agriculture. He opposes a treaty with the Star Kingdom of Manticore. [HOTQ]

Adams. PM major. Esther McQueen places him in command of coordinating her units with the Octagon’s defense grid during her attempted coup. [COWn]

Adams, Ludmilla. Klaus Hauptman’s personal chauffeur, bodyguard and security chief. [HAE]

Adamson. PRH SS citizen lieutenant, a member of Rob Pierre’s personal security detachment. [COWn]

Adcock. RMN Vice Admiral of the Green, the head of the Weapons Development Board, [IEH]; and Fourth Space Lord. [AOV] He is a native of Maslow and migrated to Manticore too late for prolong treatment. He graduated eighth in his academy class. At the age of one hundred fourteen, he is too old for a space-going command but his mind is still first-class. He often asks line officers for opinions on proposed weapons systems. [IEH] He sold Admiral Danvers on the idea of building HMS Minotaur to test the LAC carrier concept. [EOH]

Adderson. Queen’s Own Regiment captain of the Copperwalls Battalion, a member of the Salt Flats Detail since suffering a broken leg. He is a native of the Ice Gia Settlement on Sphinx. [WOHq]

Addison, Calvin. PRH people’s commissioner assigned to Citizen Captain Joanne Hall. He is killed when PNS Schaumberg is severely damaged. [EOH]

Address from the Throne. One of the very few occasions when full regalia is worn and displayed in the Star Kingdom of Manticore’s House of Lords. [FOD]

Adelaide System. Star system in the Silesian Confederacy. [WOH]

Adler, Battle of. The worst defeat in the history of the RMN. Citizen Rear Admiral Tourville’s task group virtually wipes out Commodore Yeargin’s picket. [IEH] The RMN Board of Inquiry determines that she was unprepared and lacked sufficient offensive-mindedness. [EOH]

Adib. Female RMN captain of HMS Hydra. She is a stickler for correct military etiquette. [AOV]

Adler System. Star system occupied by the PRH and conquered by the RMN’s Sixth Fleet. It has a G0 primary. It is selected as a target for the PRH to inflict a defeat on the RMN. A task group commanded by Rear Admiral Tourville wipes out the RMN force and reoccupies the system. HMS Prince Adrian is forced to surrender although her convoy escapes. [IEH]

Admiral Quinterra, PNS. PN BB, part of Task Force 12.3 in Operation Icarus, Citizen Rear Admiral Porter’s flagship. She is destroyed at the Second Battle of Barnett. [AOV]

Admiralty House. RMN headquarters. It is located in Landing and is slightly over one hundred stories in height. [AOV]

Adonai, HMS. RMN CL commanded by Commander Victor Ainspan. [EOH]

Adrian Bayside. Solarian League-registry passenger ship on which John Mullins, Charles Gonzalvez and Citizen Admiral Mládek leave Prague. [SOTSl]

Adrienne, Queen. Adrienne Michelle Aorianna Elizabeth Winton, the daughter of King Roger II and Queen Solange; Queen of the Star Kingdom of Manticore. After her mother’s death, an assassination, she became estranged from her father and they had, at best, a distant relationship. As Crown Princess, she was adopted by a treecat named Seeker of Dreams on a state visit to Sphinx. He and several other treecats foiled an attempt to assassinate her. After that, her father’s attitude changed and they enjoyed a much closer relationship. [WOHw] She names Seeker of Dreams Dianchect. [COS] As Queen, she ensured that any person adopted by a treecat who entered Manticoran military service would not be parted from their treecat. [OBS]

Adrienne Cross. Manticoran military award designed by King Roger II to honor members of the Queen’s Own Regiment who risk or lose their lives defending the royal family. The Queen’s Own nicknamed it the Spitting Kitty because it bears the image of a snarling treecat. Eleven people have won it in the two hundred fifty years since it was created, nine of them posthumously. [COS]

adultery. On Grayson, the man is generally blamed. A man who engages in adultery violates his obligation to care for and love the women he has married and who bear his children. [FIE]

Advanced Tactical Course (ATC). RMN course for command officers known as the “Crusher.” When Honor Harrington took the course it was taught by Admiral Courvoisier. [OBS] She is asked to teach it while convalescing after returning from Hades. The ATC Center is located on Saganami Island. One of Harrington’s innovations is to introduce Allied navies’ technology. [AOV]

Agamemnon, HMS. RMN BC, part of BatCruRon 5 in a division with HMS Invincible and HMS Intolerant. She is destroyed in the Battle of Hancock. [SVW]

Agard. PN citizen lieutenant, a crewmember of the pinnace commanded by Citizen Lieutenant Commander Proxmire. [EOH]

Agnelli, Federico. PRH SSN citizen admiral. He is among those who attempt to break away from the newly established Republic of Haven after Oscar Saint-Just is killed. He is one of the last to be defeated. [WOH]

Agni, HMS. RMN CL commanded by Captain (j.g.) the Honorable Michelle Henke. [FOD] She is reassigned to Sixth Fleet before Honor Harrington returns to the RMN. [HAE]

Agursky, Anthony, 14^th Baron of Novaya Tyumen. RMN commander assigned to BuShips. He is in charge of Skyhawk evaluation program. During the evaluations, the Attica Avalanche hits. He takes control of the rescue operation much to Honor Harrington’s disgust until he is ordered to return to HMS Broadsword. He and Pavel Young are second cousins and he hates Harrington for what happened between her and Young at the Academy. [WOHh]

Aidan, Duke. Manticoran peer of the realm, an uncle of Elizabeth III. His wife is named Anna. [EOH]

Ainspan, Victor. RMN commander, the senior Manticoran prisoner aboard PNS Krashnark. He was captured when Vice Admiral Tourville’s task force hit the Zanzibar System. He formerly commanded HMS Adonai. [EOH]

Air. Inhabited planet in the Air System. Dawtry is its capital and largest town. [MTHg]

Air System. Star system in the Solarian League, originally settled by the Teutonic Order which named it Ehre. The League has a sub-regional headquarters on it. [MTHg]

Aitschuler, Karl. RMNA midshipman. His midshipman cruise is in HMS Gauntlet. He was in Honor Harrington Introductory Tactics class and earned three invitations to dinner at her house. [SOTSs]

Ajax, HMS. RMN ship to which Sir Hakon Nessler was to be assigned as sixth lieutenant. Before he took the assignment she was lost with all hands. [MTHg]

Ajax, HMS. When Sir Hakon Nessler “borrows” Colonel Arabi from Lord Orloff, he renames her HMS Ajax in honor of the RMN ship lost with all hands to which he was to be assigned. [MTHg]

Ajax. RMN lieutenant commanding a courier boat. [COS]

Akimoto, Joyce. RHN lieutenant commander, Admiral Kirkegard’s staff astrogator. [WOH]

Akimoto, Tsukie. Inhabitant of Sphinx, the daughter of First Shareholders. She is a reclusive artist best known for her portrait of Stephanie Harrington and Lionheart. She is adopted by a treecat. [WOHw]

Al Hijaz Mountains. Mountains on Sphinx where Samantha’s clan lives. [HAE]

Al-Nassir. Caliphate Navy ship commanded by Lieutenant Commander Ben-Fazal. She is destroyed by a PN cruiser. [SVW]

al-Salil, Louis. RMN captain, commander of the 1007^th LAC Group (Temporary). The levels of training and preparedness he tolerates are sadly deficient. [WOH]

Alant, IANS. IAN CL that disappears in Silesia. It is either captured or turned over to the PN, renamed Forerunner and placed under the command of PN Captain Vaccares. She is captured by HMS Fearless and IANS Neue Bayern. [SOTSw]

albatross, Sphinx. Extremely graceful sea bird native to Sphinx. [SVW]

Albertson. GSN captain who succeeds Captain Greentree in command of GSNS Benjamin the Great. As such, he becomes Admiral White Haven’s flag captain. [EOH]

Alcazar, PNS. PN DD, senior ship of Task Force 12.3’s destroyer screen. She is accidentally destroyed by PNS Tascosa. [EOH]

Alcerro, Marcy. Colonel of the Sphinx Forestry Service. She was adopted by a treecat she named Musashi. [WOHw]

alcohol catalyzer. Substance that, when ingested, prevents alcohol from affecting a person. [MTHg]

Alcott, Francine. RMN sensor tech first class in HMS War Maiden. [COWm]

Alexander, Lady Emily, Countess White Haven. Wife of Hamish Alexander, Earl White Haven, one of the most beautiful and beloved holo-drama performers. She is rendered a paraplegic in an aircar collision and her nerves fail to regenerate. [OBS] She remains one of Manticore’s leading producer/directors and a leading poet. [IEH] Before her accident she rode horses, played tennis and grav skied. Although it was never discussed, she knew about his liaison with Theodosia Kuzak. His other brief affairs hurt her, not for the betrayal, but for what had been taken from them. She has seventy-five percent use of one hand but that is her only motion below the neck. [EOH] She realizes that her husband and Honor Harrington love each other but do not act on it for fear of hurting her. When the High Ridge government begins the rumor campaign that they actually are lovers, she helps defuse it by publicly acknowledging Harrington as a dear friend. After her return from Sidemore Station, Lady Emily explains that she and Samantha have been having extensive discussions about how silly humans act. She gives her blessings to them acting on their love for each other. [WOH]

Alexander, Lord Hamish, 13^th Earl of White Haven, Admiral White Haven. RMN Admiral of the Green, brother of Lord William Alexander and husband of Lady Emily Alexander. [OBS] He and Admiral Kuzak have been friends since childhood. Shortly after his wife’s accident, he and Kuzak had a brief affair because she sensed he needed the strength and support. [FOD] He translated Gustav Anderman’s Sternkrieg. From his flagship HMS Reliant, he leads the task force from Manticore that comes to the assistance of Grayson and prevents the loss of HMS Fearless (CA-286). [HOTQ] He shifts his flag to HMS Sphinx. [SVW] He is named President of Captain Lord Pavel Young’s court martial. He commands Task Force 4, part of the Home Fleet. His flagship is HMS Queen Caitrin. At the time, only nine RMN active duty officers are senior to him. He makes orders Honor Harrington not to challenge Earl North Haven to a duel. After she defies him and kills North Haven, he regrets having given an illegal order and one he knew would be ignored even if legal. [FOD] He leads the primary thrust at the PRH after war is declared and is, for the first time, stopped in the Nightingale System. [FOD] He leads the primary offensive against the PN, being finally checked in the Nightingale System. [FIE] He continues his drive on Trevor’s Star and considers making a direct attack despite his reputation as a master of the indirect approach. He also manages to incorporate certain ideas of the jeune ecole despite his distaste for it. [HAE] He is given command of Eighth Fleet, to be activated in the Yeltsin’s Star System with GNS Benjamin the Great as flagship. At the time, he is ninety-three T-years old. He is deeply respected by the Graysons as the victor of the Third Battle of Yeltsin and the conqueror of Masada. At one time he served as Third Space Lord. While being chastised by Honor Harrington for narrow thinking, he has a brief realization of how attracted he is to her, an emotion that comes through to her through her link with Nimitz. As a result, when she is captured, he feels guilty that he may have driven her off Grayson. [IEH] By the time of her funeral, he is sure he is the reason. When word of the attack on the Basilisk System is received, he orders Eighth Fleet to re-deploy from Trevor’s Star to Basilisk via the Manticore Wormhole Junction. He arrives just in time to prevent further damage and to inflict severe casualties on the attackers. [EOH] When Honor Harrington returns to Trevor’s Star, he is glad she is wearing the uniform of a Grayson admiral so he can greet her as an equal. [AOV] Because of the mutual hatred between him and Sir Edward Janacek, he is placed on half-pay. He and Harrington realize they love each other but do nothing about it because of their mutual respect for Lady Emily. The High Ridge government, in an attempt to neutralize their influence, starts a rumor campaign that they are, indeed, lovers. This is somewhat complicated by the fact that Samantha adopts him. Acting on intelligence that she sends him directly, he travels to Grayson to arrange for the GSN to reinforce Trevor’s Star. Using the Manticoran Wormhole Junction on an emergency priority basis, they arrive just in time to discourage Admiral Giscard from pressing his attack. Following the fall of the High Ridge government, he is made First Lord of the Admiralty. Lady Emily, after extensive discussions with Samantha, gives her blessings to he and Harrington acting on their love for each other. [WOH]

Alexander, Wayne. Political prisoner of the PRH, the longest-held prisoner on Hades. He was imprisoned for criticizing the Technical Conservation Act of 1778 P.D. After spending over seventy years on Hades, he escapes with Honor Harrington. He goes to work for Harrington helping design and then as her flight engineer on Jamie Candless. He settles on Grayson and joins the Church of Humanity Unchained. [AOV]

Alexander, Lord William MacLeish. Younger brother of Admiral of the Green Lord Hamish Alexander, Lord of the Exchequer in the Cromarty Government. [OBS] After the fall of the High Ridge government, he becomes prime minister. [WOH]

Alexander, PNS. PN cruiser commanded by Commander Trent, one of the ships assigned to retrieve Operation Argus data. [SVW]

Alice in Wonderland. Book by LEWIS CARROLL (1832-1898). Honor Harrington says she feels like Alice after returning to the Star Kingdom of Manticore from Sidemore Station after all the changes caused by the fall of the High Ridge government. [WOH]

Alizon, Princedom of. Star nation in the Alizon System, a member of the Manticoran Alliance. [AOV]

Alizon System. Star system allied with the Star Kingdom of Manticore. It is one of the PRH’s objectives in the first round of the war against Manticore. [SVW] They begin constructing shipbuilding facilities. These are destroyed by Operation Icarus. [EOH] Star system where Pottawatomie Creek is officially registered. [COS]

Allemaigne. One of the languages spoken by John Mullins. [SOTSl]

Allen. Andre Warnecke’s bodyguard, shot to death by Honor Harrington. [HAE]

Allen System. Star system in the Silesian Confederacy. [HAE]

Allenby. GSN commander, executive officer in GNS Terror. [FOD]

Allerton. RMN captain, captain of a ship at the same time Captain Bachfisch commands HMS War Maiden. [COWm]

Alouette, Henri. PRH SSN gravitic array technician. He is a bully and shirker, loathed by almost everyone who knows him. He is to be arrested but escapes from the ship in a skinsuit. His SUT jams open, slamming him into a gravitic array, shredding the suit and killing him. [SOTSf]

Alp Arslan, PNS. PN BC, part of Rear Admiral Chin’s attack force. She is destroyed when they are lured into a Manticoran minefield. [SVW]

Alpha Station. Primary IAN base in orbit of Potsdam. [HAE]

Alphand, PNS. PRH SSN ship assigned to Twelfth Fleet. She is destroyed by computer command by Shannon Foraker when it seems that they are about to attack Twelfth Fleet ships. [AOV]

Alphanes. Ancient, long-dead space-faring civilization. They built in crystal and only shattered remains are left. Much research was done on them by Kalpriades who wrote Survey of the Alphane Worlds. [MTHg]

Alto Verde System. Star system conquered by the PRH. Members of the Alto Verde Navy are imprisoned on Hades. [EOH]

Alvarez Field. GSN new planetary base, the location of the Bernard Yanakov Tactical Simulation Center. It is only thirty minutes away from Harrington City by air car. [IEH]

Alvarez, Jason. RMN commander, captain of HMS Troubadour. He survives the ship’s destruction but is killed as a prisoner of war by the Masadans at Blackbird Base. [HOTQ]

Alveretti, Gina. RMN officer, communications officer in HMAMC Scheherezade. [HAE]

Alwyn. Petty officer, a prisoner on Hades. Once Honor Harrington captures Styx, he is assigned to communications. [EOH]

Amami, Basil. PSN commander, executive officer in PSN Annika. [COWm]

Amaterasu, HMS. RMN light cruiser. [HAE]

Amberson. RMN lieutenant commander, tactical officer in HMS Apollo. He is killed during the operation that captures Blackbird Base. [HOTQ]

Ambristen. RMMC general, the commanding officer at the time of the Attica Avalanche. [WOHh]

Ambuscade. Armed merchant ship owned by Thomas Bachfisch and commanded by CAPTAIN Laurel Malachi. She is, technically, an auxiliary of the Confederacy Navy. [WOH]

Ambush, HMS. RMN DD in the same division as HMS Arrowhead and HMS Attack. [SVW]

Amphitrite, HMS. RMN BC, part of the Elric System picket force. She is damaged during the PN attack on the system. [AOV]

Amy. Prisoner held on Hades, sister of a man named Adam. An SS man attempted to take her as his slave. Adam tried to stop him and was killed. To show her defiance, she slit her own throat rather than allow herself to be taken. [EOH]

Anderman, Baoyuan. Victor at the Battle of the Farnham System. [AOV]

Anderman, Chien-lu, Herzog von Rabenstrange. IAN Gross Admiral, [WOH]; a cousin of Emperor Gustav Anderman XI. His flagship is IANS Derfflinger. [HAE] He is fifth in line for the throne. He takes command in Silesia and after meeting with Honor Harrington, agrees to assist the Alliance against the RHN forces in Silesia. [WOH]

Anderman Empire. Empire founded by Gustav Anderman I. Its capital is Potsdam in the New Berlin System. Its language is German. Although they have an interest in the Silesian Confederacy, they recognize the Star Kingdom of Manticore’s interest in protecting its merchant traffic. The Imperial Charter mandates that the Crown pass to male heirs, only. [HAE] The Empire begins taking a more aggressive stance with RMN units in Silesia. After Admiral Honor Harrington and Admiral von Rabenstrange come to an understanding, the IAN helps Task Force Thirty-Four defeat the RNH’s Second Fleet. The Empire and Star Kingdom then agree to, basically, divide the Silesian Confederacy between them as spheres of interest. [WOH] See also

Ascher, Gianna. RMN master chief petty officer, senior noncom in HMS Prince Adrian’s combat information center. She is among those who are captured when the ship surrenders. She survives the escape from PNS Tepes and makes it to Hades. She designs and makes the carrier with which Honor Harrington carries Nimitz on Hades.

Asencio. San Martin ambassador to the Star Kingdom of Manticore. He delivers San Martin’s request to be made part of the Star Kingdom. [AOV]

Asgard System. Star system located 332 light years from the Durandel System and connected to it by a wormhole. [FOD]

Ashford, Stewart. RMN officer. As a lieutenant commander he is a LAC captain in HMS Minotaur. Promoted to commander, he receives command of one of the squadrons. [EOH] Promoted to captain (j.g.), he is COLAC in HMS Incubus. [AOV]

Astra-class. Havenite merchant ship class, sometimes armed and used as Q-ships. They mass 7.6 million metric tons. [OBS]

Astra-class. RHN CLAC class, one of the new classes developed at Bolthole. [WOH]

Astrides, George. RMN rear admiral, commander of the Ninth Battle Squadron in Task Force Thirty-Four. [WOH]

Athena. Treecat, a member of Nimitz’s clan. She is one of those who migrate to Grayson. [IEH]

Athinai Resort. Largest and best known ski resort in Gryphon’s Olympus Mountains, the sight of the Attica Avalanhe. [WOHh]

Athinai Switch. Minor fault line, a previously unknown branch of the Olympus Fault that causes the Attica Avalanche. [WOHh]

Atkins, Valeria. RMN lieutenant commander, astrogator in HMS Gauntlet. [SOTSs]

Atlas-class. Hauptman Lines passenger luxury liner class, built specifically for the Silesian runs. They have minimal cargo capacity and are built with military-grade inertial compensators and impellers. The EW suit is equivalent to a Homer-class BC and have received Phase One and Two upgrades including drones, though without stealth capability. They mass about one million tons. They are sufficiently armed and crewed to deal with most pirates. Most of the crew is ex-Navy personnel. [HAE]

Attack, HMS. RMN DD commanded by Commander Fargo. She is in the same division as HMS Arrowhead and HMS Ambush. [SVW]

Attica Avalanche. Serious avalanche on Gryphon in which Honor Harrington was mentioned in dispatches for her efforts in the relief operation. [SVW]

Attila, PNS. PRH SSN Warlord-class BC, part of the group under the joint command of Citizen Major General Thornegrave and Citizen Commodore Yang. She is destroyed for failing to obey Honor Harrington’s order to surrender. [EOH]

Audubon Ballroom. Network of former Mesan slaves led by Jeremy X. They are considered the most notorious terrorist group in the settled galaxy, using murder and mayhem against Manpower, slavers and their supporters. [COWm] Following the engagement, he a court of inquiry finds him negligent for allowing Annika to get so close. He remains in the RMN, rising to flag rank and then leaves on half-pay. He commands an armed merchant, Pirate’s Bane in Silesia. He continues working for Admiral Givens, passing on intelligence as he finds it. He warns Honor Harrington that the IAN is becoming more powerful and provocative in Silesia. On a hunch, he shadows RHN Hecate, concluding that the RHN is operating in Silesia. In an engagement against another RHN DD, he is wounded, losing his legs, but survives to report the RHN presence to Harrington. Brigham, Mercedes. RMN and Grayson officer. She is a native of Gryphon. [FOD] As a lieutenant, ship’s master in HMS Fearless (CL-56). [OBS] As a lieutenant commander, executive officer in HMS Troubadour. She survives the ship’s destruction and is captured by the Masadans. At Blackbird Base, she is repeatedly gang raped and severely beaten when she defends herself and suffers a number of broken bones and internal injuries. She volunteers for the Endicott occupation but finally finds the situation too difficult and request assignment to the GSN as a “loaner.” She is promoted to captain is assigned to Admiral Honor Harrington as chief-of-staff. Burke, Jessica, Countess of Green Vale. Manticoran peer of the realm, a member of the Conservative Association and the Government Whip in the House of Lords in the High Ridge government. [WOH]

BURNS, ROBERT. (1759-1796) Scottish poet. When Yuri Radamacher considers the Law of Unintended Consequences, a quote from Burns’ To a Mouse, “The best laid plans o’ mice an’ men gang aft agleih,” occurs to him. [SOTSf]

Buttercup, Operation. RMN offensive designed to end the war with the PRH. It is based on the RMN’s Medusa-class and GSN Harrington-class SD(P)s, LAC carriers and Ghost Rider technology and spearheaded by Admiral White Haven’s Eighth Fleet. The offensive succeeds beyond anyone’s imagination. The Alliance is closing in on Haven when Duke Cromarty is killed and the government changes. Cachat, Victor. PRH SS citizen lieutenant. He graduated third in his class at the SS academy, [SOTSf]; where he recorded the fourth highest pain threshold on record. [COS] Kevin Usher’s initial impression of him is that he is Durkheim’s wonder boy. Usher agrees to work with him on finding Helen Zilwicki after she is abducted. Although true to the PRH and SS, he is disgusted with Durkheim’s tactics and disapproves of him. During the rescue, he kills the entire unit of SS and Scrags who are supposedly there to assist him. [COWf] Oscar Saint-Just assigns him to investigate the murder of People’s Commissioner Jamka. After Admiral Theisman’s coup, he has himself placed under arrest pending the new government’s determination of his status. He is, initially, named governor of the La Martine Sector but he request reassignment back to Haven. Virginia Usher, having met him in Chicago, adores him. [SOTSf] Kevin Usher sends him to Erewhon with Ginny to represent the Republic of Haven at Hieronymous Stein’s funeral. He and Ginny maintain the fiction that they are lovers. He has come to understand that he is, for her, the family she never had. They become involved in the attempt to kidnap Princess Ruth. He and Lieutenant Palane discover that they are very attracted to each other. Aboard Felicia III, he cold-bloodedly shoots several Masadans just to prove he is serious about requiring information. Thanks to his efforts, the Erewhonese abrogate their treaty with the Alliance and ally with Haven. [COS]

Caminetti, Sean. Oscar Saint-Just’s private secretary, brother of Citizen Lieutenant Kevin Caminetti. He warns his brother to warn Esther McQueen that Saint-Just is ready to move against her. [AOV]

Camp Charon. PRH special prison located on the planet Hades. Its existence has been denied for seventy years by both the Legislaturists and the Committee for Public Safety. [IEH] Citizen Brigadier Dennis Tresca is the commander. It is not really one camp but a series of small prisoner settlements located all over the planet. The headquarters is on an island named Styx which has been terraformed to allow farming to feed the camps. Camp populations average about twenty-five hundred. A special prison for troublemakers is Camp Inferno. Food delivery is by shuttle and if a shuttle is attacked, that camp is simply left to starve. [EOH]

Camp Inferno. Special camp on Hades where troublemakers from all other camps are placed. It is the first camp with which Honor Harrington makes contact. [EOH]

cancer. Lung cancer is the third most common cause of death on Grayson. It had been cured after they left Earth by a vaccine perfected by Lao Than. [HOTQ]

Candice, HMS. RMN prototype repair ship. The personnel assigned to HMS Minotaur are given orders to Candice as a cover. [EOH]

Candleman, Hugh. PRH SS ground forces citizen private in PNS Tepes, one of the two men assigned to “baby-sit” Horace Harkness. Harkness kills him at the start of the breakout from Tepes. [IEH]

Candless, James. Harrington Steadholder’s Guard armsman. His father was killed on GSN Grayson at the Battle of Blackbird. [FOD] He is her number two armsman. [HAE] He is one of Honor Harrington’s “travel party” who accompany her everywhere. [FIE] He is among those captured on HMS Prince Adrian and Harrington disguises him as a Grayson marine lieutenant to ensure he is kept with them. Candor System. System in the Manticoran Alliance, one of those in which the PN makes an incursion before the First Battle of Hancock. [SVW] It is captured by the PN as part of Operation Stalking Horse. [FIE]

Canmore Republic. One of the two nation-states on Silvestria. It was founded by colonists of the Conforming Wee Free Kirk. They are assisted by Manticore in their war against the Kingdom of Chuiban. [WOHd]

cannibalism. The SS documented examples of it in several camps on Hades that were allowed to starve as punishment. [EOH]

Canning Wallace. PRH consul on Medusa. [OBS] As a result of the failure of the operation, he was stripped of his position and reduced to being a Prole. He is a spy for InSec inside the Citizens’ Rights Party but becomes a double agent working for Rob Pierre. [SVW]

Cantor. Pollster on Grayson with the reputation of being in Lord Mueller’s pocket. [AOV]

Cantrip, HMS. RMN CL, one of the ships that help to evacuate personnel from Seaford Nine. [EOH]

Caparelli, Sir Thomas. RMN Admiral of the Green, First Space Lord who succeeds Admiral Webster. [SVW] He is a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of King Roger. As a young officer he was grievously wounded in Silesia and was treated by Dr. Alfred Harrington. Although not the intellectual or strategic equal of Admiral White Haven, he has a stolid personality and is more ideally suited to overall command of the RMN. [AOV] He is among the admirals put on half pay by the High Ridge government, allegedly because he “deserved a rest.” After the fall of the High Ridge government, he returns as First Space Lord. Cape St. Vincent, Battle of. Battle fought on February 14, 1797 in which the RoyalNavy defeated the Spanish. Midshipwoman Helen Zilwicki writes an analysis of it for Honor Harrington’s tactics class. [WOH]

Capital Field. Main space-to-ground facility in Landing. [FOD]

Capital Fleet. PN fleet that remains in the area of Haven. It is commanded by Citizen Admiral Esther McQueen before she is made Citizen Secretary of War. [IEH] She is succeeded by Citizen Admiral Amanda Graveson and Citizen Vice Admiral Lawrence MacAfee as her deputy. It contains over seventy ships of the wall. Oscar Saint-Just is suspicious of McQueen’s motives when she wants to transfer some of them to combat operations. Citizen Admiral Theisman is appointed to command it because of the belief in his complete disinterest in politics. He succeeds in preventing the executions of Graveson and MacAfee. [AOV]
